M-DCPS BRIEFING
Superintendent Recommends Reorganization and Restructuring
April 15, 2008

In the wake of massive budget cuts to public schools statewide, and with the Florida Legislature considering bigger reductions for next year, Superintendent Rudy Crew is bringing to the School Board a reorganization and restructuring of selected district offices and regional center offices that will save costs and promote efficiency.

The Florida Legislature is considering significant reductions to statewide K-12 spending. At the March School Board meeting, the Superintendent said the District anticipated the need to make large cuts from the 2008-09 budget, and he outlined a series of possible budget reductions. The Superintendent’s proposal that the Board will vote on at the April School Board meeting would save approximately $13.7 million in recurring annual costs, including $8 million by consolidating the current six regional center offices into four and $5.4 million by eliminating central office positions now assigned to support the School Improvement Zone.

Associate Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has provided the Board with a 3-year revenue and liability scenario based on current and future state budgets. (To review the presentation, click here.)

The Superintendent will present the reduction in force recommendation to the Board at the May School Board meeting. Both the reorganization and the reduction in force would take effect on June 30, 2008, or soon thereafter. (To review the April agenda item, click here.)
